Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga: Supporting Your Body Through Pregnancy and Beyond
Pregnancy and early motherhood are life changing events, and often overwhelming seasons of life. Your energy changes day to day. Some moments feel deeply connected and calm, while others can feel unfamiliar or exhausting. Yoga during this time is not about performing or pushing. It becomes something much simpler—and more important: a way to stay connected to yourself.
At Live Yoga, we support students through every stage of pregnancy and postpartum recovery, whether they are completely new to yoga or continuing an established practice.
Can You Do Yoga While Pregnant?
In most healthy pregnancies, yes—yoga can be a safe and supportive form of movement.
But prenatal yoga is not about doing “advanced” poses or maintaining your pre-pregnancy practice. It is about adapting, softening, and learning to listen more closely to your body. It can also be a very special way to connect with your baby. Cultivating this connection is a beautiful part of the journey.
Many students are surprised to learn they do not need prior yoga experience. In fact, pregnancy is often when people first step onto a yoga mat.
Why Prenatal Yoga Can Be So Supportive
As your body changes, yoga can help you stay mobile, grounded, and more comfortable in daily life.
Some of the most common benefits include:
Gentle support for hips, back, and pelvic discomfort
Improved posture as your centre of gravity shifts
Better breath awareness and relaxation
Reduced stress and mental overwhelm
Increased body awareness and balance
A dedicated space to slow down and check in
Perhaps just as importantly, yoga offers something many pregnant people don’t get enough of: permission to pause.
“I’ve Never Done Yoga Before”
This is one of the most common concerns we hear.
Yoga is not about flexibility or experience. It is about awareness and connection. Pregnancy often naturally brings people into a slower, more mindful relationship with their body, which makes it an ideal time to begin.
In class, you are never expected to keep up. You are encouraged to modify, rest, and move in a way that feels right for you.
Choosing the Right Classes During Pregnancy
Every pregnancy is different, but slower-paced and more supportive classes are often the best place to begin. Gentle movement, foundational alignment work, hip and back support classes, and slower Hatha-style practices are commonly chosen by prenatal students. More dynamic flow-style classes may still be appropriate for some people, especially those with previous yoga or fitness experience, but we always recommend listening closely to your energy levels and comfort. It is never advisable to increase your fitness routine or try new and challenging yoga practices during pregnancy.
The Role of Prenatal Yoga Series
While drop-in classes offer flexibility, many students also appreciate the structure and community of a dedicated prenatal yoga series.
These series are designed specifically for pregnancy and create a consistent space to:
Move safely through pregnancy-specific practices
Learn breathwork and relaxation techniques
Explore tools for labour and birth preparation
Understand pelvic floor awareness
Reduce common pregnancy discomforts
Connect with other expectant mothers
One of the most meaningful parts of a prenatal series is often not just the movement—it is the shared experience. Being in a room with others going through the same life stage can bring comfort, reassurance, and connection.
Postnatal Yoga: Returning to Yourself
After birth, everything changes again. Your body is recovering. Your sleep is disrupted. Your daily rhythm revolves around caring for a new baby. Postnatal yoga offers a gentle way to begin reconnecting with your body without pressure or expectation. This stage is not about “bouncing back.” It is about rebuilding strength slowly, with care and patience.
Common areas of focus include:
Releasing tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back
Reconnecting to breath and core awareness
Supporting pelvic floor recovery
Improving posture from feeding and carrying
Creating space for rest and nervous system regulation
Even a short practice can help you feel more grounded in your body again.
Mom & Baby Yoga
For many new parents, leaving the house can feel like a challenge in itself.
Mom & Baby yoga creates a space where you do not have to choose between caring for your baby and caring for yourself.
Babies are welcome just as they are—awake, asleep, feeding, crying, or needing attention. There is no expectation for a perfect class experience.
These classes are as much about community as they are about movement. Many parents find connection with others navigating the same early stage of life, which can be just as supportive as the physical practice itself.
A Gentle Reminder
Pregnancy and postpartum are not times to “push through.”
They are times to slow down, adapt, and listen.
Yoga does not need to look a certain way during this season. It simply needs to support you—wherever you are, however you show up.
At Live Yoga, our goal is to create a space where you can move, breathe, rest, and feel supported through every stage of motherhood. We have pre and postnatal yoga series running regularly check below to find our about the next session!
