How Much Does Yoga Cost?

Starting a personal yoga practice can be a life-changing endeavour and your investment will vary based on your goals and preferences for rolling out your mat for the very first time! This blog will explore the cost of yoga so you’ll have a good idea of what to expect when starting out. Skip to the end to read our other blog about Live Yoga’s pricing for yoga classes in White Rock, British Columbia!

Practicing yoga at home is the least costly option - all you will need is a mat and some guidance.  There are many resources to learn yoga, from yoga books and manuals to free YouTube channels. You can also livestream yoga classes from the comfort of your home like the many classes offered on Live Yoga’s weekly schedule. To practice, you can simply wear comfortable and stretchy clothes you already have, or splurge on $100+ yoga pants or $70 crop tops from Lululemon Athletica.  Aside from clothing, yoga props can really support your practice when starting out and help you achieve poses with ease and comfort. Yoga mats can range from a $35 Halfmoon Essential Studio Mat to the $96 Bmat Strong Mat. Yoga blocks are an essential prop for most classes and cost anywhere from $8 to $25 depending on material (foam, cork, or wood) and brand. You also might consider a yoga bolster if you’re interested in restorative yoga practices. A Halfmoon rectangular yoga bolster will cost you $87. If practicing at home, you can also easily get by using some folded blankets as a cushion or improvised yoga bolster. This will save you some money when starting out! When starting a home yoga practice, expect to spend less than $35 on a tight budget or $500 or more for the latest and greatest gear.

Practicing yoga at a local community center or fitness facility can be a cost-effective option for yoga. Many community centers offer very cheap drop-in rates from as little as $6 or have classes as part of their memberships. Do expect some busier classes though as lots of people opt for the low cost, especially when starting out.

Practicing yoga at a studio is the ideal oasis to enjoy classes. As there are many different styles of yoga and studios, let’s explore the different pricing options available.

Drop-in yoga classes are great and mean you can purchase one class at a time. These are often the most expensive option, ranging from $17 to $25.

Yoga class cards or punch cards include a group of classes and often have a set expiry date. For instance, you could buy 5, 10, 20, or even at some studios, 100-class cards. Usually the more classes you purchase the cheaper the per class cost is. For example, if you buy five classes, the cost per class could range from $15 to $19 whereas if you purchase 20 classes, the cost per class could range from $10 to $15.

There are also a variety of yoga studio memberships (even gyms and fitness centres sometimes offer yoga) out there. The most common yoga studio memberships would be a monthly unlimited contract membership, or month-to-month unlimited yoga pass. Unlimited yoga passes are the best deal if you want to do a lot of yoga! A month-to-month unlimited pass is the more expensive option, usually ranging from $100 to $180 at some studios. Boutique yoga studios with specialized classes can have monthly rates as high as $300 for their spa-like atmosphere and unique class options. Month-to-month unlimited passes are low commitment meaning you can enjoy a month of yoga, then take a break without worrying about breaking a contract agreement.

Auto-renewing contract memberships get a further discount by committing to a term of 3, 6, and often 12-month periods for unlimited yoga. Prices for unlimited yoga memberships on a contract range from $70 to $170 per month for unlimited access to all classes. The best thing about signing on for an unlimited membership is the savings! The more yoga classes you take the less you pay. For example, if your membership is $115 per month (like the Live Yoga Monthly Membership) and you attend five times per week, you are paying just $7.20 per class. This is a huge savings when compared to a drop-in class for $20. You will need to provide a credit card and have your billing information on file to be charged each month.

Yearly unlimited yoga memberships can range from $1,000 to $2,500 for a full year of unlimited access at your favourite yoga studio. This is a one-time payment and is often non-refundable so do make sure you are ready to commit for the full year. Some studios offer major discounts on their full year memberships during Black Friday and Boxing Week sales. Keep an eye out for these huge discounts if you love getting a deal!

Auto-renewing class passes are another great option for students looking for a set and forget option where they never run out of yoga classes, and they can book their weekly classes without stress. These passes automatically renew on the student’s account once they run out or classes or expire. Usually, these class cards are set up to renew every 30 days, three months, six months, or 12 months (much like a 12-month contract unlimited yoga pass) and some will even auto-renew if the classes are used during the set expiry period. For example, if you purchase a Flex Pass 4 at Live Yoga ($58), you get one class per week or four classes over a 30-day period.  If you use all your classes in the first week your pass automatically renews, charging your credit card and a new 30-day period starts with another four classes. It’s like a Starbucks card for yoga studios! The downside of these types of passes is that if you do not use all your classes before they are set to renew, the classes are no longer available for use. If you need to cancel your auto-renewing class pass, expect to give at least 48 hours notice; some studios require seven days notice to cancel and not be charged. This is where you want to read the fine print!  Committing to an auto-renewing yoga pass get you a deal and you can expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $17 per class.

I hope this blog was informative and gives you a good idea of how much practicing yoga costs!  Please note these class costs are based on Canadian industry standards in 2022.
